Quote of the Day

" Let the beauty of what you love, be what you do. "
- Rumi

Excerpt from The Broken Hoof

'Suddenly, without grasping what she was doing, she found herself strutting toward the crimson ticket booth of the carousel ride. She had been so deep in thought that she didn’t realize that she walked straight toward it. Even though she hesitated for a second, she entered enchanted. Slowly, she promenaded toward the cherry-colored stand. With each step, she could hear the clicking of her buckle clanging against the metal bars of her brace.

Step by step, the sounds echoed in her mind, chiseling the rhythm of her footsteps. Karen could smell the scents of root bear, hot dogs, and pretzels thick all around her. Umm, smells good, she thought to herself. What a perfect place to be on a summer’s day. It’s so awesome being here.'

I was originally inspired to write this book because of my mentor. He had seen an add in a magazine back in 1983, and suggested I write a chapter and enter the contest. So, trusting him completely, I started to think about what I should write. Then one day while relaxing after my studies, my mentor and I took a walk to the Santa Monica Pier. There I got my inspiration to write and create a story about a carrousel horse. Within one month’s time, I wrote and submitted my story to Kaleidoscope Literary Magazine.

I was feeling very confident in myself, and my achievements as my writing, grammar, and comprehension was so improved. My writing technique had come a long way from that person who could not even write a clear constructed sentence. Time went by, and I forgot all about my entry. I had become so engrossed with my studies that I forgot completely. Then, one day, out of the blue, I received a second prize certificate in the mail for my story. What a sweet surprise that was!

For months afterwards, I dabbled with my writing. Although, after a while, my writing came to a full stop. For over 7 years, my story was locked away in my filing cabinet. Then, one Saturday evening, while entertaining a guest, we began to talk. The subject of writing came up. I pulled out my manuscript and from that day forth, I worked feverishly to finish it. I was on a mission. And I was highly motivated to complete my work. I had come full circle, and knew I had to help others.
